Taking up my duties as a newly elected councillor is swallowing up much of my time these days. So much to do to get up to speed. Orientations, reading, meetings. It's fascinating and mostly fun.
Though I'm still just me, I guess I have to admit, I'm now officially a "politician." One of "them." How do I know? The criticism in local papers is well underway.
Goes with the territory, I suppose. Yet, naively, I thought perhaps folks would sit back and see what this fledging group of seven might bring about before we were tarred and feathered as "same old same old." Sigh....
There has been one working meeting of council since the election (what with inauguration and the holidays). The second is tomorrow, and the agenda is full.
My goal is for us to work together, in spite of differing ideologies and philosophies, to bring about the best outcome for North Cowichan.
One of my new duties is to chair the Climate Change Advisory Committee, which is in the middle of seeking and gathering input from citizens for creating the "North Cowichan Climate Action and Energy Plan." I know I blogged about this last time, but I think, going forward, this is one of the most important initiatives facing North Cowichan.
We want and need your help. We've heard from about 87 of you already -- which is great -- but with a population close to 30,000 I'd like to hear from many more. Part of the problem is getting the word out.
We’re trying to address our energy use and the impacts of climate change on our community.
What are your ideas, big and small, that will help lead us to a sustainable future?
With workshops and online engagement, we are hoping to harvest your wisdom.
The fruits will lead to the “North Cowichan Climate Action and Energy Plan.”
We want to hear from you, the citizens and neighbours of North Cowichan.

What is a greenhouse gas? How is the climate changing? And how can carbon reduction strategies improve your community socially, economically, and environmentally?
The library is hosting an information session on these topics by Cowichan Energy Alternatives on Thursday, January 26th, at 11 am (doors open at 10:45). Citizens, students, and business owners will be especially interested in how a carbon footprint assessment can demonstrate leadership and save money!
Our local governments have chartered with the BC Government to reduce emissions with the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2012. Your actions as an individual play a role in this goal. The presentation gives many suggestions in small changes we can all make in our recreation, travel, home, food, banking, and more.
