The last several months have felt like being on a protracted job interview. Whew!
To my new employer -- the residents of North Cowichan -- thank you for the trust you have placed in me.
Thank you to each and every candidate that stood for office in the Cowichan Valley -- whether incumbent, challenger or acclaimed -- who stepped up to serve the community. During the grueling weeks leading up to the election, each of us put our best foot forward and made our lives transparent -- wore our platforms on our sleeves (and websites)
Kudos to one and all -- elected or not. In my books, all of the candidates are winners for stepping up to stand for the values they believe in. To stand up to serve. It was a pleasure to be among such folks.
And thanks to each resident who took the time to learn about candidates and get out to vote. You also stepped up to serve our community, marking a ballot for candidates whose values and visions you believed in.
Thank you to the outgoing members of North Cowichan council for their years of service. Tom Walker, whose calm leadership steered the ship through some choppy waters this past term and who has given decades to his community. Dave Haywood, for his 20 years of local elected community service, including the past six years on the VIRL board. Garrett Elliott, whose even-tempered, thoughtful and courteous manner will I'm sure be greatly missed.
And last, but certainly not least -- George Seymour, who has served the Cowichan Valley for 15 years and was instrumental in bringing forward many of the ideas in the Official Community Plan (both the 2002 version and the newly adopted version) and whose many other initiatives are too numerous to name.
As the new council members take up the baton that has been passed to us, one of my personal commitments is to do my best to keep in touch with residents -- to keep communication open and flowing.
To that end, I will keep writing this blog and updating this website.
Again -- thank you for the trust and confidence you have placed in me. I hope to continue to earn that trust by listening, learning and doing my very best to support what is best for our community of communities.
