I'm putting my name forward for a third term on North Cowichan Council.
My values have not changed since my first run. They fall into three broad categories: Communication, Real Economic Health and Smart Growth. Communication requires collaboration and relationship building. Real Economic Health includes affordable attainable housing and food security. And Smart Growth helps us steward the environment and attempt a sustainable future for those to come.
Local government decisions effect the health of the region and its citizens. sustainable growth, a healthy environment, affordability, and food security contribute to healthy communities. Nurturing relationships -- with First Nations -- and all levels of government, NGO`s, business and community groups smooths the way.
Supporting recreation and arts and culture attracts and retains citizens and businesses. And, equally as important, maintaining infrastructure keeps us from overburdening those to come.
As well as voting for the candidate or candidates you resonate with come October 20th, all citizens across the valley will be asked whether they support Drinking Water and Watershed Protection ($3.79/$100K residential assessment) and/or Affordable Housing ($3.87/$100K residential assessment)
Info was mailed to all households. The CVRD Board spent many hours learning and deliberating before a majority voted to ask citizens if they support them. It started with a 2016 Statistical Survey which showed the majority of Citizens in the valley want some action on water and affordability.
Some candidates are saying they are for or against taxing for these issues, which may be interesting to know, (I am for) however its you and your fellow citizens who will decide as each candidate, including CVRD board members, only has one vote. Please do your due diligence and learn the facts before you go to the polls. And whatever you feel about those questions, I hope you get out and vote for your future on October 20th.
