There were quite different responses at the door. (to be expected) Most people are polite, even though its obvious they are either non-commital at this point, or committed elsewhere.
There are a few people who are rude, or accuse Council of perplexing things. One man talked of corruption -- claiming only people who know Councillors are able to open businesses here!?! Really. Wow. Where that came from is beyond my comprehension.
There were the folks who feel taxes are just about right and those who think they are way too high.
The lady who angrily told me (among other misguided things) that she was upset at the huge inflated salary I get as a Councillor (I was pretty certain she wouldn't feel that the stipend of $ 20,000 per year was a huge inflated salary -- she was living after-all in a home worth at least $ 600,000, but alas, she wasn't really interested in facts) Sigh....
It was heartening that more than I expected, recognized my name, some had already visited the website (at least one through the link on the Cowichan NewsLeader -- thanks) and were happy to volunteer that I was, 'on their list' to vote for.
The woman that made my day? She'd just moved here from one of the Gulf Islands -- LOVES it -- as does her dog, who was still wet from his daily swim at Maple Bay beach.
When I asked her how she felt about taxes, she said, "it's unbelievable, they are so
cheap" (and she felt she got so much more for them as well) Honestly, that comment really did make my day!
