Had a wonderful time at Share the Harvest this afternoon. An event co sponsored by many diverse groups in our beautiful valley. Kudos to Providence Farm, The Cowichan Green Community, Cowichan Wine & Culinary Festival, Thrifty Foods, MNP llp, Newsleader Pictorial, Island Savings, the CVRD and the Cowichan Valley Bottle Depot for working together to put on such a fun filled and informative family event. A real demonstration of 'neighbours working together to make our visions real.'
Thanks to Susan Smith for the blast from the past, as I sewed a cloth napkin on her 1940's treadle sewing machine. I learned to sew on my Nanny's treadle machine decades ago.
Share the Harvest was a chance to enjoy a plethora of workshops, take a hay ride, build a birdhouse, get your face painted, eat fresh corn and watch or enter a local food pie contest, while mingling and connecting with like minded friends and neighbours.
There was live music, a chance to try your hand at sheet mulching, learn about growing your own food and browse vendors that support our local food community.
I enjoyed talking to Mike from 8 1/2 acres, at 6776 Somenos Road. Mike, Talynm and their business partners will be offering a CSA box program in 2012.
Eugene Fleck of Boys Road was on hand with his Hunter Bee houses and Craig Evans from Growing Opportunities Community Farm Project, currently farming 2 acres at Providence talked about his group's focus - working to help support food security.
